How to Teach Subtraction Using Number Bonds

We found it easier to teach Subtraction using Number Bonds. There was no need to memorize subtraction facts like how we did it when were Mastering Basic Addition.

Number bonds are often found in Singapore Math Workbooks. It creates a good visual relationship between adding and subtracting. Once the child masters basic addition, it’s relationship to subtraction can be shown easily with Number Bonds.

Number bonds is as simple as showing that two parts will make up a whole.

In addition, you are given the two parts and will be asked to find the whole. In subtraction, you are given the whole and one of the parts so that you can determine the other part.

Showing this relationship allows the child to visualize the answer for both addition and subtraction.

Below are practice worksheets for Subtraction Using Number Bonds. The first two are subtracting from numbers 1-10 only. The next two, are subtracting from 1-20. Finally, we mixed them up in the last two subtraction worksheets for a little challenge.

We also added a sample worksheet and a blank worksheet.

DADDY TIP: If this is the first time you will be using Number Bonds, I suggest doing addition first for the child to be familiar on using number bonds.
