Who is God Learning Activity

We are learning Who is God as part of the homeschool curriculum for Kindergarten. Below are some activities we will be using to learn who God is.  The activities we prepared for Gab includes book reading, Bible reading, a word find worksheet, singing songs and writing exercises.

These activities are not meant to be finished in one day.  It is not also in sequence.  Feel free to start with any activity.  Ideally, the activities will be completed within a week so that you can jump to other Bible activities in the following weeks.

Finally, your child might have tough questions about Who is God. Childrensministry.com has some tips on how to respond when kids ask about God.

Who is God Learning Objective

Our goal is to provide an introduction about God and make the child familiar with God’s characteristics based on what the Bible says.  This is also to establish the fact that the Bible is our guide in knowing more about God.

Who is God Suggested Activities

1.  Book Reading.  We bought a really nice book, Questions from Little Hearts (Little Blessings), during the M/V Doulos visit in Manila last 2007.  That’s four years before Gab was born. 😀  The first chapter is about What is God Like?  (Read an excerpt here)  It’s a lovely rhyming book written for kids.  The chapter on What is God Like talks about a child asking God who He is.

Questions From Little Hearts - What is God Like

I can’t see you, God,
so please give me a clue;
Do you look like me,
and do I look like you?

Later, God himself answers each of the child’s questions.

You won’t find
a picture of me in a book.
There isn’t one person
who knows how I look.

But don’t be upset
that you can’t see my face.
You can look at my work
in this beautiful place.

Bible references are provided at the end of the chapter.  If you don’t have a copy of this book, no worries.  You can skip it and use Activity #2 instead.

2. Bible Reading.  For the Bible Reading, any Bible translation will do. If you have an illustrated version for kids, that will look nice.  I have a Serendipity Bible NIV with large fonts at home which we will be using.

The following verses talks about God and His character. I picked 10 verses that reveal who God is.  But the Bible has so much more to say about God.  Read these verses with your child and discuss what each verse reveal about God. If possible, ask the child to react to each character of God and what it means to him or her.

  • 1 John 4:16 – God is Love.
  • Genesis 1:1, Psalm 33:6,9 – God is our Creator.
  • Matthew 6:32-33 – God is like a Father who provides.
  • Isaiah 66:12-13 – God is like a Mother who comforts.
  • Psalm 23:1, Isaiah 40:11 – God is the Good Shepherd.
  • Exodus 3:14, Exodus 6:3 – God is The Almighty.
  • Psalms 32:8, Isaiah 48:17 – God is Our Teacher.
  • Isaiah 53:5 – God is Our Healer.
  • Ephesians 2:4, Luke 6:36 – God is Merciful.
  • Luke 2:11, Psalm 68:19 – God is Our Savior.

4. Workbook. I bought a Children’s Activity Bible.  It contains the Bible stories retold in 1-2 pages plus activity pages at the end of each story.  Pages 8-19 contains the story of creation.  This is a good follow up to the topic Who is God as Our Creator.  The Children’s Activity Bible is available at National Bookstore for 385 Php.

5. Singing.  I chose this song as a response to God.  The song is entitled A Gift To You.  It’s about being thankful to God and dedicating every actions and thoughts to Him.  It’s an easy song to learn and memorize.  If you know other songs related to Who is God, please share it in the comments below.

6. Writing Exercise.  I find this optional but this is to encourage Gab to practice writing.  This activity can serve as a culmination activity for all the things the child learned about Who is God.  This exercise is taken from Activity #2.  After reading the verses again, ask the child to fill in the missing the letters to reveal Who is God.  Click on the image to view and download the worksheet.
