Giving your child some lessons on painting, dancing, singing can go a long way.  The benefits of arts to kids includes motor skills, language development, decision making, and improvement in academic performance.

Different Art Forms

When you say Arts, the first thing that probably comes in mind will be the visual arts.  This includes drawings, paintings, and sculptors.  We call someone artistic when they can draw and paint.  But the Arts comes in different forms.  Below are some art forms that your child can be good at and where the child can get the benefits of arts.  The list below is not even complete yet.

  • Dance
  • Sing
  • Play
  • Act
  • Draw
  • Pretend
  • Paint
  • Sculpt
  • Create
  • Tell Stories
  • Make Music
  • Imagine

Every child is an artist

I did not say that.  The great artist, Pablo Picasso, said it first. While there are some guidelines in making a masterpiece, it should not apply to the child yet. It might hinder their creative process.  Instead, let the child express freely.  Don’t expect them to draw like Leonardo, nor compose like Mozart, nor write like Hemingway right away.  Just let them explore and find their expression first.

1. Motor Skills. Holding art tools like brushes, crayons and even scissors help develop hand movements that is essential to develop writing skills.

2. Language and Communication Skills. Making art help increase vocabulary by learning the shapes, colors, actions and objects. Children also learn to express themselves in both verbal and non-verbal means. Kids who are into theater arts learn non-verbal communication skills through body languages.

3. Learning Skills. Getting children into arts exposes them to the process of learning.  Children get to move from one competency to the next.  Through art, they become open to receive instructions and apply it.

4. Creative Thinking. Kids who are into arts are good in looking things at a different perspective and think outside of the box. This skill will be very useful as they grow up and build on their careers.

5. Problem Solving Skills. Art is problem solving in disguise. How do you turn clay into another object?  What shapes will you use to draw a car? The more art works they make, the more they practice their problem solving skills.

6. Focus. Have you seen a child draw?  Have you seen a child rehearse for a play? Have you seen a child memorize the lines of a song? You can really see how focused they are in their work as if they are creating a masterpiece. Any form of art can train children to give full attention and to focus.

7. Perseverance.  It can take days or weeks to master a simple piano piece.  It can take days to memorize lines for a short play. Art teaches children not to give up until they complete the task given.

8. Collaboration. Dancing, Singing and Theater Arts can be a group activity. Children learns that they need to work together and to rehearse with other children in order to accomplish a greater goal.  Collaboration skills will come in handy when they land a job where collaboration happens everyday.

9. Improve Academic Performance. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts (three hours a day on three days each week through one full year) are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement.
